Hot and Steamy
One dating app conversation. Nine uses of the word baby. Zero respect for boundaries. Through one exchange, Camille explores what persistence looks like when it ignores a clear "no" and why genuine interest begins with curiosity not access. It's a witty, sharp reminder that boundaries aren't unkind; they're the beginning of self-respect.

What Actually Happened Here
He said "baby" and "pretty" a combined nine times. He asked how I was twice and never once asked anything a stranger doesn't already know the answer to. "I am James" is the only fact he offered about himself in the entire conversation, and even that came wrapped in "baby" on both sides, which is exactly why he doesn't get to keep that name here. Everything else was a photo, a compliment, a location, repeat.
I told him plainly. Not interested. He didn't ask what changed my mind or try to fix anything, he just said "No baby," like my answer was a typo he could talk over. That's the tell, and that's the name he earned. A man who respects a no treats it as information. A man who doesn't treats it as an opening bid.
So when he circled back with "Hw was your night pretty," after I'd already told him he wouldn't hold my attention, I gave him exactly the kind of answer that question deserved. "Hot and steamy" isn't an invitation. It's a mirror, and it's also just true. I'm dealing with onset menopause, which means most nights I'm hot and sweating even with the AC running, cold a few hours later, and back to hot before sunrise. He heard something else entirely, and I let him, because he'd spent the whole conversation handing me empty flattery instead of real questions. I wasn't flirting back. I was being condescending, letting him hear whatever he wanted to hear while I told him the actual truth of my night and watched it sail right past him.
And then he asks me to tell him about myself. I'd already told him, in plain English, that he wouldn't hold my attention. That's not an insult that needs smoothing over, it's information, and the correct response to being told you're boring isn't to ask the bored woman to entertain you with her life story. Why would I hand over anything real to a man I just said wouldn't keep my interest? He wanted the access anyway, regardless of what I'd already said. "No. And no." was the only answer that respected my own sentence from three messages earlier.
Then he told me he needs me. A stranger who's known me for the length of a comment thread, who I've already turned down twice, decided "need" was the word to reach for. That's not longing. That's a man who's used to wearing women down by outlasting their no, and he picked the wrong one to try it on. Need is not a word you get to use on someone you haven't earned the right to want yet.
Meet Mr. No Baby. Here's the whole exchange, timestamps included. I posted a couple of photos.
He showed up in the comments before he ever showed up in a real sentence.
